I want to make a difference
Autism South Africa is a partner in the international project “Activate Yourself” that is being sponsored by the European Union and will take place in conjunction with

Ÿ
Autism Europe
Ÿ
Beijing Stars and Rain Education Institute for Autism (China)
Ÿ
The National Autistic Society (UK)
Ÿ
VšĮ Socialinių inovacijų centras (Lithuania)
Ÿ
Action for Autism (India)
Ÿ
Jamaica Autism Support Association
Ÿ
The European Disability Forum

The role of this project is for people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder between the ages of 13 and 30 years to meet and

Ÿ
discuss and learn about active citizenship, discussing challenges faced by people with an ASD and searching for solutions;
Ÿ
be guided as how to exercise their rights arising from active citizenship and also respect obligations;
Ÿ
to make young people with ASD aware of their role in creating their own future by equipping them with competences and skills in the field of social interaction, active citizenship and exercise of their rights;
Ÿ
to contribute to development of strategies for better quality of life of young people with ASD by preparing initiative directives for future policy regulation of status of young people with ASD;
Ÿ
to contribute to inclusive growth and youth employment and to fight against poverty and marginalisation of young people with ASD.

The first stage of this year- long project needs to commence right at the beginning of 2012 as two representatives from South Africa will be elected to attend (fully sponsored)the International Youth Conference in Beijing China in March 2012, accompanied by one elected person who established and leads one of the groups.

Youth Camp in Slovenia
Later in the year at least 50 young people with ASD that will be selected from all project partners will meet at the Youth Camp, and they will have a chance to communicate, “hang out”, and meet people from different countries and cultures. This project aims to provide the broadest possible participation of young people with ASD from all over the world. Young people with ASD will be invited to Youth Camp by international tender. The camp will be organized in the frame of China’s yearly Festival of Autism.
